Slipperfield’s Director, Gillian Murray, has led numerous and various pre-acquisition due diligence, dilapidations and survey projects across her 24+ years career. She has led national service lines and overseen delivery of pan-European portfolio instructions. In her previous employments within client-side roles at The National Trust for Scotland and The Landmark Trust, Gillian has accumulated significant professional and technical knowledge on the care and repair of Scotland’s built heritage environment.

Pre-AECOM, Gillian’s role was to manage the maintenance and improvement works at The Landmark Trust’s properties in Scotland and to project the £700k restoration of two derelict cottages in Caithness.

Gillian’s role was to provide professional and technical knowledge and support for the built heritage environment across a portfolio of 264 heritage assets, including Scheduled Ancient Monuments, A-listed buildings from mansion houses to castles to working water mills, and B-listed buildings from mills to cottages to doocots.
She advised on cyclical and capital buildings works and enabled the programming activity and commissioning of appropriate services and contractors to carry out works, including ensuring that works specifications, contracting, and project management were compliant with legislation and NTS technical and conservation standards.
She was the primary surveying specialist within her region and the emphasis of her role was advising on the conservation and care of the built environment, compliance against policy, statutory and legislative frameworks internally and externally, and the planning and coordination of programmes and works on behalf of the regional management team.
She also assessed building owners/occupiers’ proposals for works requiring the NTS’s approval under conservation agreements.
In carrying out her work, she liaised and consulted regularly with other heritage professionals, including conservators, archaeologist, curators, archivists, rural and estates surveyors, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, building surveyors and project managers.
She was in regular contact with Historic Environment Scotland’s district architects, technical teams and grants department, as well as local authority planning and conservation officers.
Gillian advised her regional management team on budget priorities for the maintenance and improvement works required across the Edinburgh & East portfolio. This involved reviewing quinquennial survey data, discussing defects and works with external consultants and internal stakeholders, weighing up matters at different properties and putting together cohesive, substantiated arguments for expenditure priorities across the region’s assets.
